Superhero Envelopes

Since I had the envelope templates made and superhero logos made, I decided to put the two together and make these superhero envelopes. They measure 4.25 x 6.25, so a 4×6 photo fits just perfectly, and the stamp area fits right under the size of a regular US Postage Stamp (if you are actually mailing them). Hope you enjoy!

Valentine Envelopes

I am not one for the $1 store variety of Valentines for my kids to give out. So generally we make the valentines exactly what we want (which I will show in a later post) and print them as 4×6′s at Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club. Sam’s Club ended up being 13 cents each. However, 4×6′s don’t fit in the standard envelopes and besides — they are so boring. So, this year, I designed the envelopes too, and I am sharing. Below the pictures is a PDF with all 4 designs, don’t try and print the pictures, they aren’t the correct dimensions. Print the PDF at 100% and then cut them and fold them on the lines. Hope you enjoy!

Plaid Photo Mattes

Ever wanted to matte your pictures, but couldn’t find the right color matte? Here’s a quick Photoshop tutorial to help you turn this:

into this:

in just a few easy steps.

This tutorial is for Photoshop specifically, but can be done in most modern graphic software programs, as long it allows for layers.

Open your photo in Photoshop, and open your layers palette by clicking Window > Layers or hit F7.
Click Layer > New > Layer from Background.
Select the single row marquee tool and select a single row (a selection 1 pixel high x the width of your picture) from your picture. Choose a row that has a varied selection of colors for a more colorful plaid, or for a more monochromatic look, choose one that has muted colors.
Click Ctrl-J to create a new layer with your selection on it.
Select your bottom layer (the picture) again.
Select the single column marquee tool and select a single column with the same things in mind as step 3.
Click Ctrl-J to create a new layer again.
Select your new layer and click Ctrl-T or Edit > Transform > Scale
Drag it to be the full width of your picture.
Select your other “1 pixel layer” and do the same, only this time drag it to the full height instead of width.
Change your top layer to 50% opacity.
Drag your bottom layer (the original picture) to be the new top layer.
With that layer selected, click Ctrl-T or Edit > Transform > Scale and scale it to approximately 85%.
Choose Layer > Layer Style > Inner Glow, then make the settings match below.
You are done! Now chose File > Save and save the layered file if you want to be able to edit it later. Then File Save As and save a JPG that you can print out at your local photo lab or online.

There are literally tons of possibilities — you can even do black and white!

Be Blocks

This was a craft for the 12-13 year olds. We came up with this.

Start with the blocks — I used 2×4′s. They are inexpensive and easy to come by. A full 8 foot board will run you just $2-$3. Cut them into squares/cubes. (A 2×4 is actually 1.5″ x 3.5″ — keep that in mind).

Print out the labels (attached at the bottom of this post) and cut them out.

Use ModPodge to glue them to the boards. You can paint the boards beforehand if you want, but in this case, we decided to go with the natural look.

The finished product. Do two coats of ModPodge for best results, then spray with a clear sealant. Don’t worry, the white streaks you see are me being too antsy to get the pictures taken and up, ModPodge dries clear.

The pdf has enough labels for 14 blocks — 6 pages total, each page with a separate attribute

Super Hero Capes

My boys (and girls) LOVE Super Hero capes. Because I had a hard time finding images that I liked, I made some, and will share them with you. It’s a PDF, and you can choose which pages you want to print. Having the their cape be their initial rather than an off the rack version makes them feel loved and special, and I encourage you to try it! Even if you have NO sewing skills, you would be surprised what even a flour-sack dishtowel with the paper pinned on will do for a 3-year-old’s energy level. Good Luck and Have fun!
